NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 22 — The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) said Saturday Azimio leader Raila Odinga’s bodyguard Maurice Ogeta had been released after from alleged police detention following an apparent arrest on Wednesday.

ODM said Ogeta was released “a few minutes to 1am and driven while blindfolded and left in the middle of the road in Ruai towards Kangundo”.

The party also said that Ogeta’s car, from which he was reportedly intercepted while driving to work, was vandalized.

Ogeta’s apparent release came hours after his brother obtained orders from the High Court compelling the police to produce him in court.

Justice Lawrence Mugambi had issued the directive following an urgent suit application filed by Christopher Onyango Ogettah on Thursday.

“Pending the hearing and determination of this application inter-parties, a writ of habeus corpus is hereby issued directing the 2nd Respondent to produce Maurice Ogeta before a court of competent jurisdiction in Nairobi or any other Court within the Republic of Kenya for an inquiry into the issue of his detention,” ruled the judge.

Justice Mugambi further directed the petitioner to serve relevant petition papers to respondents pending a mention slated for July 31.

“Leave is granted to the Petitioner/Applicant to file and serve any further documentation/replying to affidavit if need be within three days.”
