Sri Lanka apprehends 37 Indian fishermen for illegal fishing

COLOMBO, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) — The Sri Lankan navy apprehended 37 Indian fishermen along with five fishing trawlers for poaching in Sri Lankan waters, a military statement said on Sunday.

The navy said it conducted special operations to chase away Indian poaching trawlers from Sri Lankan waters on Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

“The separate operations led to the seizure of five Indian trawlers with 37 Indian fishermen poaching in Sri Lankan waters off Mannar as well as near the Delft Island, Jaffna,” the navy said.

The navy said it remains committed to conducting routine patrols and operations within Sri Lankan waters to deter the unlawful fishing activities of foreign trawlers.
