There’s a Sh5mn reward if you qualify for WAFCON – CS Ababu to Starlets

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 24 – Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has promised national women’s football team Harambee Starlets a Sh5mn reward if they qualify for next year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Starlets are playing Botswana in the final round of qualification, and an aggregate win over the two legs will lead the team to their second appearance at the prestigious African competition.

And, with Harambee Stars having been promised a Sh2.5mn reward for every win in the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, their female colleagues are also swimming in the same financial promise.

“Starlets are now in the final qualification hurdle for the WAFCON. If they qualify, I have five million shillings for them. Anything we owe to the boys is similarly available for the girls,” Ababu said.

Starlets are already in camp and will take on Botswana at home next Wednesday, and they seek a favourable result to take to the return fixture to Gaborone.

Starlets have only qualified for the Women’s Cup of Nation once, in 2018, when they were eliminated in the group phase.

Having beaten Cameroon on penalties in the first round of qualification, confidence is high they can replicate that result against Botswana and earn a ticket.
