Vihiga swat aside title challengers Bunyore as Madira assassinate Bungoma Queens in top-tier Women Premier League encounters

NAIROBI, Kenya, November 26 – Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Women Premier League champions Vihiga Queens tightened their grip on the lead on the log with a 4-2 win over Bunyore Starlets in a Western Kenya derby at Mumboha Grounds in Luanda on Sunday afternoon.

The legacymakers raced into the lead in the fifth minute courtesy of Tumaini Waliula who latched on to a through pass from Anne Norah to slot past Yvonne Musungu in the Bunyore goal.

They were two to the good three minutes later as Martha Amunyolete converted from the penalty spot to create daylight between the record league champions and their closest challengers for the 2023/24 title.

Bunyore came back from the dressing room a much improved side, Noelle Shilachilo finding the back of the net eight minutes after the restart.

However, their resurgence lasted for only seven minutes as their experienced opponents increased their lead through substitute Diana Cherono, who benefited from some wonderful spadework from Waliula to fire a ‘rocket-propelled grenade’ past Musungu.

Waliula and Amunyolete combined in the 69th minute for the former to collect her brace before Shilachilo saved Bunyore’s blushes in the 82nd minute with her second strike of the afternoon.

The win sees Vihiga’s lead at the top increase to 19 points from seven matches — seven ahead of second-placed Bunyore.

In the other matches of the weekend, Madira Soccer Assassins recovered from last week’s loss to Bunyore to pip Bungoma Queens 2-1 in an early kickoff at Mumboha Grounds.
