Kipchumba shines at Shanghai Marathon as Chepyego, Chumba clinch podium places in women’s race

NAIROBI, Kenya, November 26 – Kenya’s Philemon Kipchumba made history in China when he clocked an all-comers record of 2:05:35 to win the Shanghai Marathon on Sunday.

The 2022 Munich Marathon champion capitalised on the sunny conditions in the Chinese city to cross the finish line ahead of Tanzanian Alphonce Felix Sambu (2:05:39) and fellow Kenyan, Solomon Kirwa Yego (2:05:42), who came second and third respectively.

His time smashed an eight-year-old record held by another Kenyan, Moses Mosop — who timed 2:06:19 at the Xiamen Marathon in 2015.

It was the second marathon title in China for the 25-year-old this year, following his triumph at the Xiamen Marathon in April when he timed 2:08:04.

It is also his third marathon title this year after he clocked 2:10:47 to win the Hong Kong Marathon in April this year.

In the women’s race, Ethiopian Siranesh Yirga Dagne emerged victorious in 2:21:28 as the Kenyan duo of Selly Chepyego Kaptich and Eunice Chebichii Chumba who clocked 2:21:51 and 2:22:20 in second and third respectively.
