Nanjala misses last minute penalty as Botswana frustrate Starlets at Nyayo

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 29 – Violet Nanjala missed a last minute penalty as Harambee Starlets were frustrated to a 1-1 draw by Botswana in the first leg of their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier at the Nyayo National Stadium on Wednesday.

With virtually the last kick of the game, Nanjala who had come on as a second half substitute was presented with the opportunity of winning it at the death following a handball inside the box, but her effort was saved by the keeper.

Already, it had been a frustrating second half for the Kenyan girls with the Botswana side taking time-wasting antics to the next level.

Were they being paid by mileage, then the Botswana medical staff would be travelling back to Gaborone as billionaires, judging by the number of kilometers they ran to and from the pitch to attend to their grass-loving players.

Marjolene Nekesa’s penalty at the stroke of halftime had drawn Starlets level after the visiotors had gone ahead through Keitumetse Dithebe, but the fight in the second half was hampered greatly by the time-management skills from the visitors.

At any opportune moment, the players easily went down to the ground even without contact, killing Starlets’ momentum on the ball.

And with all the minutes wasted on the ground, only five were added by the referee.
