I will consider vying subject to ODM mass recruitment, Raila says » Capital News


NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 1 – Azimio La Umoja Leader Raila Odinga now says his sixth stab at the 2027 presidential race will be pegged on the numbers registered during the ongoing ODM mass recruitment going on countrywide.

Odinga who was speaking in Shinyalu constituency, Kakamega County, rallied the youth across the country especially ODM stronghold to turn for the exercise insisting that the youth are the vanguard of the party.

The Raila Odinga led party commenced the recruitment drive ahead of grass root election set for March 2024 as well as to enhance the party’s image ahead of the 2024 polls.

“When you register as party members, I will consider. Just make sure you register as ODM party members then I can consider whether to continue with the political race,” he told the crowd.

The ODM Leader expressed that the opposition party will miss out in the upcomimg polls if the youth don’t join the association and scale it forward.

“We want the youth to join ODM party and give it power because they are the vanguard of the party.Those who are not youth let them scale up instead of lulling the party,” Odinga noted.

Key leaders within the opposition coalition have been pushing for a succession plan in which Odinga will be a king maker by backing another candidate to face President William Ruto in the 2027 polls.

Former Vice President and Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has declared he will be in the presidential race and is regarded by his supporters as first among equals in the crop of leaders hoping to succeed Odinga.

Musyoka has emerged as the face and voice of the opposition in Kenya’s politics after the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition team failed to clinch the Presidency on August 9.

Odinga who lost narrowly to President Ruto moved to the Supreme Court to challenge the outcome of the polls albeit unsuccessful.

Butere MP Tindi Mwale urged Odinga to vie in the 2027 general election which four months is away advising him to choose Former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya as his deputy.

“Baba we want to tell you that its not too late for you to vie. We urge you to run the race in 2027 and choose Oparanya as your Deputy President,” Mwale said.

Odinga had hinted backing Kalonzo to face President William Ruto 2027 intimating he could be retiring from politics.

Hours later he come out to clarify media reports that he endorsed Musyoka for the presidency in the 2027 general elections.

Odinga said that he only praised Kalonzo for his strong decision to support him in successive elections saying he hadn’t retired from active politics.
