Kisumu given ruthless welcome to Kenya Cup by Kabras in Kakamega as KCB maul Nondies at Lion’s Den in opening weekend

NAIROBI, Kenya, December 2 – Kenya Cup defending champions Kabras Sugar beat Kisumu RFC 72-10 to kickstart their 2023/24 season on a flier in their opening match on Saturday at the Kakamega Showground.

Coach Carlos Katywa’s charges were in a ruthless mood, taking a 26-10 lead in the first half before assuming beast mode in the second 40 to put the newbies to the sword.

Derrick Ashihundu was the man of the moment, with four tries to his credit whereas the skipper, George Nyambua, added two more.

Others who sweetened the win for the sugar millers with a try each included Dan Angwech, Jone Kubu, Matthias Osimbo, Walter Okoth and Teddy Akala.

At the Lion’s Den in Ruaraka, Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) continued their dominance over Nondies with a 45-08 mauling of the record Kenya Cup champions.

Nondies drew first blood in the 15th minute courtesy of penalty goal before the bankers replied with a try in the 25th minute to take the lead.

The match soon ballooned into a see-saw affair as Nondies put the ball over the chalk to make it 8-7 in their favour but KCB regained their lead with a try of their own in the 35th minute.

Coach Curtis Olago’s men soon took the game by the scruff and ran away with it, scoring one more try before the breather.

They did not relent on resumption in the second half, scoring their third try of the tie within five minutes.

By the time they scored their seventh try in the 75th minute, the floodgates were already opened and all coach Callum Oliver’s side could do was damage control.

At the Kenyatta University, Blak Blad – clad in their new maroon kit – dismissed Mwamba RFC 24-16.

Kenya Harlequin began their campaign on a flier with a 48-8 win over Catholic University Monks at the RFUEA Grounds backyard whereas Menengai Oilers made mince meat of Homeboyz RFC, winning 43-13.

Elsewhere, it was a thriller at the Nakuru Athletic Club as Strathmore Leos secured a narrow 27-24 win over Nakuru RFC.
