Talanta Hela U19: Can Homabay goal-hunter dazzle at national finals?

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 2 – Ahead of the national finals of the inaugural edition of the Talanta Hela Under-19 football tournament which start on Sunday in Nairobi, one of the players who will definitely be an attraction is Homabay goal-getter Geoffrey Omondi.

Omondi was Homabay’s darling during the national play-offs in Nyeri two weeks ago, where he emerged the top scorer, scoring eight goals in five matches and caught the eye of many scouts around, including Tusker FC head coach Robert Matano.

And now, the Form Two student at Agoro Sare Secondary School, whose ambition is to play for national team Harambee Stars, will look to step up on a bigger stage, as Homabay play in the national finals.

“As a team we are ready. We know we will meet stronger teams but that is what we have wanted. We want to compete with the best so that when we win, we also know that we are the best,” Omondi says.

He adds; “Not just for me, but for everyone in the team, our motivation is to be at that big stage and perform well. We know there will be many people following the tournament and we want to get the best out of ourselves.”

Omondi dreams of playing for the national team Harambee Stars, and Ulinzi Stars in the FKF Premier League.

“My dream is to play for the national team Harambee Stars one day, and I would also want to play for Ulinzi Stars. I want to work hard now and even in future to get the right path for my dreams,” the left footed striker noted.

Meanwhile, his coach George Ouma has tipped him for greatness, saying he has shown every sign and quality of being a top drawer player.

“Geoffrey is massively talented and we can say he is in the right hands here at Homabay. Everyday we keep pushing him to get to the greatest heights. What I love about him is that he is really hard working and listens to instructions. He is humble and that is a very key component of any player who wants to go far,” said the coach.

Homabay will start their nationals campaign on the opening day of the tournament on Sunday, taking on Vihiga in what is expected to be a blockbuster duel at the Nyayo National Stadium.
