Talanta Hela U19: Kisumu stun Vihiga to book Homabay in boys’ final


NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 10 – Kisumu County will take on Homabay in a ‘Nyanza Derby’ of the Talanta Hela Under-19 tournament national boys’ final after stunning tournament favorites Vihiga 4-2 on post-match penalties in the semis at the Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.

Kisumu will take on Homabay, who beat Nakuru 3-1 at the Barclays Sports Club, in a ‘Nyanza Derby’ in the final on Jamhuri Day.

The game pitting Kisumu and Vihiga was forced into penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

On penalties, Derrick Oketch and Austine Odongo converted for Vihiga, while Emmanuel Adunga and Vincent Agwona missed their next two kicks.

Kisumu were perfect in their kicks, Tyson Onyango, Masaba Otunga, Ostine Otieno and Austin Otieno converting all their four.

In regular time, Ostine had given Kisumu a 50th minute lead, before Vihiga fought back to level 10 minutes later through Austine Odongo.

At the Barclays Sports Club, Homabay who were beaten 5-2 by Vihiga in their first match were in a brilliant mood as they edged out Nakuru 3-1. Paul Divoi had given them a 19th minute lead, one they carried till halftime.

Two goals in five minutes from Cecil Miller (47) and Hamisi Otieno (52) cemented their lead, and despite Fredrick Odinga scoring a 65th minute goal for Nakuru, they couldn’t take the comeback to the full length.

Meanwhile, Kisumu will have a chance to go for a double after their girls’ team easily waded into the final with a 4-0 crushing victory over Uasin Gishu in their semi-final.

The game had been delayed by close to four hours over a protest by Kakamega, who Kisumu beat in the quarters, over fielding of an ineligible player.

The appeal was ultimately thrown out and when Kisumu go into the pitch, they were into business.

Emily Morang’a and Yilma Awuor scored a brace each, the former scoring within the first two minutes of the game while the latter netted in the 41st and 49th minutes.

They will take on Busia County in the girls final.

Meanwhile, the third and fourth place play-off matches are scheduled for Monday afternoon.
