Impressive KPA down Nigeria’s Customs to pick second win at AWBL

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 14 – National team star Victoria Reynolds picked a game high 21 points as Kenya Ports Authority went 2-0 in their campaign at the inaugural edition of the Africa Women’s Basketball League in Alexandria, Egypt, with a 73-53 victory over Nigeria’s Customs.

Madina Okot and Alyssa Bannister also chalked double figures with 10 and 12 points respectively as the dockers kept their push for a place in the quarter finals alive.

They however had to rise from a poor first quarter start, which saw them trail the Nigerians by half a basket, scores standing at 18-17.

A strong second quarter performance which saw them outscore the West Africans by 20 was enough to put them in the driver’s seat, and despite once again tailing by half a basket in the last quarter, the job was all but done.

“We played good basketball today and I am happy. There was good execution, defense and transition,” Ojukwu said after the game.

He added; “We have had shaky starts and that’s a point of concern. I am happy with the way they are coming back but we will have to address this. We will also emphasise the importance of taking care of the ball, making good judgement calls and regions so we can reduce our turnovers.”

They will next face off with Cameroon’s University de Douala in their third match on Thursday evening.

Meanwhile, compatriots Equity Hawks didn’t have as much luck in their Group B duel against Rwanda Energy Group, as they were thrashed 84-50 for their second defeat of the competition.

Having won against Aspac of Benin in their previous match, the Hawks needed victory to inspire some belief of progressing to the next round, but they were outplayed by their Rwandese counterparts.
