Sri Lanka to continue importing eggs to meet demand during festive season

COLOMBO, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) — Sri Lanka will continue importing eggs in early 2024 to meet the demand of the coming Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations in April, a minister said on Friday.

Following a meeting with Sri Lankan egg producers, Minister of Trade, Commerce and Food Security Nalin Fernando told reporters that the demand for eggs spikes during the festive seasons.

The minister said that egg producers are unable to deliver adequate quantities at the controlled price imposed by the government.

He said the price of eggs has been rising in the past few weeks as the Christmas and New Year season nears.

Sri Lanka’s daily egg requirement stands at 7 million pieces, with approximately 6 million eggs being supplied daily, leaving a shortage of around 1 million per day, Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera told media earlier.
