KRA issues list of items to be declared by visitors to Kenya

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 20 – The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has issued a list of items that individuals arriving in Kenya are required to declare.

They include inherited items, purchases from duty-free shops, and repairs or alterations to items taken abroad and brought back.

Others are gifts, business-related items or merchandise, currency above $10, 000, as well as all goods whose importation is regulated under the East African Community Customs Management Act (EACCMA).

Last month, the taxman enhanced vigilance across all ports of entry to enhance compliance with customs on restricted and prohibited items.

It said that it had lately observed a high number of high-end mobile phones and undeclared as well as restricted goods such as guns, magazines, drones, pornographic material, and narcotic drugs being brought into the country at various entry points.

Between July and October (2023/24 financial year), KRA on average flagged out 5 percent of all scanned bags, which were processed in line with applicable Customs regulations on passenger categorization.
